Winter is the perfect time to sell your home – the market is buzzing with buyers looking to make a move before the festive season. But with the colder months come different priorities for potential buyers. Instead of outdoor spaces, they’ll be focused on warmth, insulation, and that all-important cosy feel.

That’s why we have pulled together some top tips to help you add value to your home this winter. From energy-saving upgrades to boosting kerb appeal, these simple improvements could help you secure a higher sale price.

1. Install double glazing

Added value: £21,972

If your home is still rocking single-glazed windows, it’s time for an upgrade. Double glazing is a must for winter buyers, helping keep the warmth in and the noise out. With an average installation cost of £7,000, you could add around 10% to your home’s value – that’s a real-term boost of £21,972 after costs.

2. Update internal doors

Added value: £8,889

Internal doors play a surprisingly big role in how warm and cosy your home feels. Replacing old, draughty doors with newer models can make a big difference. Swapping out around 10 doors will set you back about £2,700, but it could increase your home’s value by 4%, equating to £8,889.

3. Replace the front door

Added value: £2,806

Your front door is one of the first things potential buyers will see, and it needs to make a great impression. For around £1,250, you can upgrade to a stylish, energy-efficient door that could add 1.4% to your home’s value – that’s an extra £2,806 in your pocket.

4. Improve energy efficiency

Added value: £2,537

Energy bills are on everyone’s mind, especially in winter, so having a good Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating can be a dealbreaker. If your home’s EPC rating is a bit on the low side, investing around £6,155 in energy-efficient upgrades could add 3% to your home’s value, a real-term boost of £2,537.

5. Upgrade the boiler

Added value: £2,255

It might not be the most exciting home improvement, but a new boiler is a big plus for buyers. For about £3,250, you can upgrade to a modern, efficient model that adds 1.9% to your home’s value – that’s an extra £2,255 to sweeten the deal.

6. Repointing

Added value: £1,047

Repointing might not sound glamorous, but it’s essential for maintaining your home’s structure and appearance. This involves repairing worn brickwork, protecting your home from the elements, and keeping it looking fresh. For around £2,000, repointing could add £2,897 to your home’s value, a tidy real-term gain of £1,047.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, winter is a prime time to sell, with high demand from buyers eager to move before the festive season. To maximise your chances of a faster sale and better price, it’s essential to focus on what winter buyers care about most—warmth, insulation, and energy efficiency. Simple upgrades can add significant value to your home, making them a smart investment for any seller looking to stand out in the market.
